English Summary

The Museum is closed from November 1st and reopens on April 1st 2011 with a new exhibition. More information from February 2011 onwards.

It is worth wile to pay a visit to the Marker Museum.

The museum is housed in 6 smokehouses on the Kerkbuurt.  One of them has been fitted up to show the way a Marken fisherman's family lived up to about 1932.  You see how the name smokehouse has come about; the house consists of a room where the smoke from the open fire leaves the house, through a hole in the roof.  Typical of Marken are the white washed walls, hanging full of plates and pictures, the wooden boxes in which parts of the costume are kept, the open fire, the rainwater-tank and the cupboard bed.

The museum also gives an impression of Marken by means of changing exhibitions, an audio-visual presentation and pictures.
